Graduates in Action
Lorri Hart (Graduated 2007)

In this profile, GGSFS graduate Lorri Hart shares her experience of how the program led her to transform her landscape design business, finding support in a community of like-minded people and renewing her confidence.

"I have always felt a deep connection to the land. My gift for designing outdoor spaces and gardens led me into a career as a landscape designer. In 2006, I was looking for a change. After learning a friend had enrolled in the program at GGSFS, I felt drawn to the school to explore how feng shui and the sustainable design practices they taught could enhance and expand my own practice. I immediately enrolled, even though it meant travelling to San Francisco each month from Seattle.

In developing my skills with feng shui, I soon recognized that practical feng shui design principles resonated deeply with me. I clearly saw that this ancient knowledge was simply another language for the design principles I was already familiar with. Once exposed to geomancy, Living Environments, and all the compass methods, I had the confidence I had found the deeper layers I was looking for to energize my design practice. This enabled me to work more intentionally and holistically with my clients, adding an entirely new dimension to my work that extended beyond just the landscape.

My experience at GGSFS increased my confidence in providing people with a greater service. Not only could I work with their outside environments, but my knowledge of feng shui carried over into their homes, businesses and individual lives. When people hire a landscape designer, they are buying a tangible service with a visible end product. Being hired to help a client with their landscape provides me with a way in, and I am then able to introduce them to deeper levels of feng shui. I feel it is a great blending of tools in my kit.

After earning my Professional Feng Shui Certification in 2007, I went on to complete the Graduate Program at GGSFS. By helping other students understand the principles of feng shui, I found my own knowledge deepened. The experience of mentoring others in the program provided me with the confidence to put myself out there in the world as an expert. This, I feel, was the greatest benefit of serving as a graduate.

I am so grateful for the network of people I have met through the program. I feel the community that formed during my experience was vital, providing a constant source of guidance and support. I have enjoyed working with fellow students on home consultations, and plan on collaborating with other practitioners where my insight into landscape design can provide clients with what they want and need.
