October 2008

Welcome

This is one of my favorite times of year and also our busiest. There's so much going on here at the school it's hard to know where to begin.

We recently spent a weekend at West Coast Green, a cutting edge expo and conference for the building and design trade promoting resource-efficiency among a stunning array of green and healthy building products. There was an overwhelming interest in the school and it was inspiring to meet many traditional people in the trade looking for alternative ways to move forward.

This coming weekend is the Bioneers Conference. Bioneers take a systemic "solve-the-whole-problem" approach. Taking care of nature means taking care of people, and taking care of people means taking care of nature. They connect the dots among most areas of human endeavor including environment, health, justice and spirit. I highly recommend you get there if you're able, (see 'Announcements' below for details). Come be inspired by a community of like-minded individuals and really get your creative sustainable juices flowing! We'd love to see you there.....

Then of course our 2008/09 program begins in just 2 weeks. This year promises to be completely amazing. We have some wonderful new teachers including Howard Choy and Tom Bender to name a few. We still have a few spaces open for the program and if you're interested we'd love to speak with you.

In this edition of our newsletter you'll read a fascinating article by Carol Venolia, and get to meet another one of our graduates, Lorri Hart.

Enjoy!

Natural Rhythm
By Carol Venolia

"Have you ever noticed that some days you're "on"- and some days you're decidedly not? Are you more productive at some times than others? Do you push yourself to keep going when you're tired? Do you ever just feel out of sync?"

In this article, GGSFS faculty member Carol Venolia, a pioneer in ecological architecture & design, explores the natural rhythm between our bodies and the sun and moon, and the dangers of de-synchronization.

"Before electric lighting dominated our world, we lived by the cycles of the sun and moon. We awakened with the sunrise, were active in the daylight, and gathered around the fire as darkness fell. This way of life wasn't merely convenient; it turns out to be vital to our physical and mental functioning, our moods, and even our survival. In fact, many researchers believe that being synchronized with natural light-dark cycles is the basis of good health.

Living indoors, it's easy to forget that our bodies have been intimately linked with natural cycles since life began..."

Graduates in Action

Lorri Hart
2007 Graduate

In this profile, GGSFS graduate Lorri Hart shares her experience of how the program led her to transform her landscape design business, finding support in a community of like-minded people and renewing her confidence.

"I have always felt a deep connection to the land. My gift for designing outdoor spaces and gardens led me into a career as a landscape designer. In 2006, I was looking for a change. After learning a friend had enrolled in the program at GGSFS, I felt drawn to the school to explore how feng shui and the sustainable design practices they taught could enhance and expand my own practice. I immediately enrolled, even though it meant travelling to San Francisco each month from Seattle.

In developing my skills with feng shui, I soon recognized that practical feng shui design principles resonated deeply with me. I clearly saw that this ancient knowledge was simply another language for the design principles I was already familiar with..."

Inspiration Point

"From the very core of our being, we desire contentment.

In my own limited experience I have found that the more we care for the happiness of others, the greater is our own sense of well-being.

Cultivating a close, warm-hearted feeling for others automaticaly puts the mind at ease."
